During the exam, we carefully inspect the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, the floor and roof of the mouth, and the throat for any abnormalities. We’re looking for red or white patches, unusual sores, lumps, or thickening of the tissues that don’t appear to be healing normally.

The Visual Exam

The screening begins with a thorough visual inspection under proper lighting. We examine all soft tissue surfaces systematically to identify anything that deviates from healthy, normal tissue. This part of the process typically takes only a few minutes but covers every area where oral cancers are known to develop.

The Physical Exam

Following the visual inspection, we gently feel the tissues inside your mouth and along the jaw and neck to check for any unusual firmness, swelling, or lumps. We will discuss any concerns with you openly and, if needed, refer you to the appropriate specialist for further testing, such as a biopsy.
