Dental Health Statistics

Understanding the numbers behind oral health can help you see why regular dental care matters so much, especially as you get older. At Pine Glen Dental Group, we believe informed patients make better decisions about their care, so we have gathered some of the most relevant statistics on tooth loss, gum disease, and preventive visits below.

Dr. Rice and Dr. Thelen use this kind of research to guide how they talk with patients about restorative treatment, gum health, and long term prevention. These numbers are not just data points. They reflect real patterns our team sees in the restorative dentistry and general dentistry we provide every day in Peoria.

Tooth Loss Among Older Adults

Tooth loss becomes more common with age, and it is one of the main reasons our restorative services exist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 10 adults aged 65 to 74 had lost all their natural teeth, and about 1 in 5 adults aged 75 or older had lost all their teeth, based on data collected from 2017 through March 2020. The leading causes of this kind of tooth loss are cavities, gum disease, and smoking.

For adults 65 and older nationally, the CDC also reports that 33 percent had lost six or more teeth as of 2020, a meaningful improvement from 39.6 percent in 2012, but still a significant portion of the older adult population. This trend is part of why our dentures, dental bridges, and implant restorations remain such an important part of our practice.

Tooth Retention Is Improving, But Gaps Remain

The good news is that Americans are keeping more of their natural teeth than in previous decades. The CDC reports that the median prevalence of adults aged 18 to 64 who had not lost a permanent tooth to decay or gum disease rose from 62.5 percent in 2012 to 67.1 percent in 2020. Complete tooth loss among adults 65 and older also dropped from 16.2 percent in 2012 to 13.8 percent in 2020.

These improvements are encouraging, but they also show that a meaningful share of adults still experience preventable tooth loss. Since gum disease and untreated decay remain leading causes, routine oral exams and consistent care make a real difference over the course of a lifetime.

Preventive Visits Matter, Especially Later in Life

Regular dental visits play a major role in catching problems early, yet not everyone gets the same level of access. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics found that in 2022, only 63.7 percent of adults 65 and older had visited a dentist in the past 12 months, and that number dropped to 53.3 percent among adults 85 and older. Adults with dental coverage were also considerably more likely to have had a recent visit than those without it, at 69.6 percent compared to 56.4 percent.

At Pine Glen Dental Group, we understand that navigating insurance and payment can feel complicated. As a fee-for-service practice, we provide a real-time, accurate estimate of what your insurance is expected to cover before treatment begins, and we submit your claim directly to your insurance carrier as a courtesy. This approach is designed to make routine and restorative care more predictable, so cost is less likely to stand between you and the care you need.

What This Means for Your Care

These statistics highlight a simple truth. Tooth loss and gum disease are common, but they are also largely preventable with consistent, quality dental care. Whether you need a routine cleaning, a restorative solution like a crown or bridge, or care for an aging smile, our dentists are here to help you stay ahead of these trends rather than react to them after the fact.
